In this head 2 head between between the STI, and Golf R they majorly screwed up. Why, you ask? Because they have a Manual in the STI, and the DSI in the Golf R. I feel like every complaint they had had about driving the R, and the way it responded to your inputs, would be avoided by having a manual trans.

You’re right— totally worthless comparo....

“the R is trying to catch-up with the STI” Huh?? I’m sorry, but which car has the antiquated engine/drivetrain that’s just been shoe-horned into an econo-shitbox? Versus the one with a new motor with the same HP/performance but 30% better fuel economy...

Well considering the Golf R doesn’t have any option of a manual as of now, they can say whatever they want about it and it can be considered valid. It was a design choice that was clearly made just like anything else about a car. If they feel like it detracts from the experience and satisfaction then they are well within their rights to hold that opinion. If there was a manual option at this very moment I think then you might have had a point.

Agreed. The golf doesn’t even have a wing.

#1: Have you ever driven a DCT? They have good throttle response, like a manual. Also, they complained about the lack of torque, throttle response, and the need to rev it and push it hard to feel anything. None of those have to do with the transmission option. It has everything to do with the fact that it is a numb, VAG product.

#2: pretty much everything Nightshade said. They did a comparison based on what is available right now. Volkswagen chose to release it in this way.

#3: Instead of complaining about two other people’s unanimous opinion (which they are entitled to, and was rare since they usually disagree. Also, one of the guys is a Cayman owner: VAG guy) you could actually go out and drive these two cars and form your own opinion.

At least they are comparing apples to apples.

Golf’s direct injection and twin scroll are great advances, but the I4, 2.0, and sideways engine with FWD-based system are objectively inferior to a flat 4 with 2.5 liters and longitudinal layout with 3 mechanical diffs.

If Subaru would just DI and twin scroll the 2.5 they’d have a monster on their hands, instead they’ll gut the displacement and just use that tech to make up the lost potential while gaining mileage.

“Objectively” huh? So if it’s clearly superior, then why is the performance the same- (0 to 100 mph the sti beats the R by 1/10 of one second) But as I pointed out, the subie has garbage fuel economy (ie- very inefficient).... Apparently, even with a sideways motor and minus all the various diffs of the sti (that I hear seem to be made of glass....) the R has zero problem keeping up with an STI...

And “If subaru would just”.. what’s the old saying about if wishes were wings? Yeah, if subaru would make a car with a decent interior, good mileage (without having to resort to a cvt) and didn’t use a total p.o.s. impreza for the base then we’d talking.... although to the impreza’s credit, at least it has a hatch-back model!

You’re comparing about a 15 year difference in engine development. The same VW engine facing the correct way and with mechanical diffs would do everything it currently does, but grippier, and the same engine bored to 2.5 would do everything it currently does, but faster (see: RS3/TTRS).

The VW does have newer tech, but think of the potential of a direct injected flat 2.5 with a twin scroll...
